Parking Meters - We Remember Dover
Parking meters were first installed in Dover in August 1946 . There were 430 meters. A nickel bought you two hours. The fine for a violation was twenty-five cents.

I think it was in the 1990s. They still have metered parking in the municipal parking lots.

When Dover installed these meters, my great-aunt, Alice Tanguay (an amateur poet), wrote this poem. The poem is dated August 17, 1946. I believe it was published in the Foster's newspaper at the time! It sounds as if the Dover people of 1946 found these meters to be quite the invention!

Dover Meters
O, have you seen the meters that Dover has installed
Along the central highway--or perhaps you haven't called
They're really quite an oddity for Dover so sedate
They stand upon their pedestals of siver, nice and straight
Their faces are so clean and bright that when you pass them by,
They seem to ask you to inspect and beckon autos--"come and try"
The owners, they have done just that much to their surprise--
As the meters were not ready yet for nickels in their eyes
Pedestrians were curious to learn the inner motion
Which turned the indicator without the least commotion
They viewed them from all angles along the central street
And appeared to get much pleasure as the meters seemed to greet
And now they're ready for their task; we know they'll do it well
For you must drop your nickel in or they will surely tell
